Name: JAPANESE EARLY 20TH CENTURY IRON PLUM OKIMONO BY SUGIMURA SEISAKU

Description: Japanese Early 20th Century plum branch & blossoms okimono 置物 (objet d'art) by Sugimura Seisaku 杉村正策 (born 1899). Sugimura was a metal engraving and chasing specialist. This okimono is made of hand hammered iron. The plum blossoms and buds are done with a enamel like red finish.

Comes with tomobako 共箱 (original artist signed wood storage box).

Signature on inside lid of box: 杉村正策 (Sugimura Seisaku) with artist's red chopmark.

Biography: Sugimura Seisaku 杉村正策 was born in Chuo-ku, Tokyo in 1899 (Meiji 明治 32). He was a specialist in metal carving, engraving & chasing. In Taishō 大正 10 (1921) he graduated from Pacific Western Painting School. He then studied under Kiyoshi Unno, a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts. He was selected for the Tokyo Prefecture Craft Exhibition as well as for the Tei Exhibition. He founded a private metal art union and presided over the metal engraving full time, and presided over the Seijukai. He went on to exhibit at all the major shows in Japan, such as the Teiten and Shin-Bunten; as early as 1919 and through the 1930's. He later was selected for the Nitten 日展 (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) six times and was a member of Shinso Kogei Association. (kunesu)
